About Bali

Bali is an extraordinarily popular island of Indonesia, and for all the right reasons. Most people in Bali speak English, making getting around a lot easier than some of the other remote island destinations. The Balinese are renowned for their incredible hospitality and spirit. I can also tell you first hand from experience, they are one of the kindest cultures in the world.
Some parts of Bali, like Kuta and Seminyak, are heavily westernised and extremely populated with tourists. This means there’s plenty of home comforts and important infrastructures. But it also means these cities will be a lot more about the hustle and bustle than others on the island.
Bali is predominately Hindu and has plenty of breathtaking religious sites to visit and traditions to be in awe of. If you respect the locals and even try your hand at learning a few phrases of Bahasa Indonesian, you’ll be welcomed into their beautiful island life and culture with open arms for your Bali honeymoon.

Balinese Visa Requirements

If you’re planning on a honeymoon in Bali, Indonesia you should first look into your country’s visa requirements. Plenty of nationalities are able to visit visa-free for up to 30 days including your arrival and departure day e.g. Australia, Canada, USA or the UK.
If you plan to visit Indonesia for longer than 30 days, you can pre-apply for an extended visa or purchase one on arrival for around 35USD. This visa grants you the original 30 days, and then after an application to an immigration office within Indonesia, you’ll be granted an extra 30 days, and this can only be used once. 30 days in Indonesia would be a dream honeymoon getaway, but if you’re interested in the extra 30 days, make sure to grab your visa first. To have a hassle-free Bali honeymoon, arrange your Indonesian visa beforehand with Visa HQ.

What Is The Best Time To Visit Bali?

Bali has that beautiful tropical island climate all year round, but certain months have less humidity and less of a crowd. Bali has two seasons; wet and dry. The wet season has more rainfall, but temperatures sit a little lower, and the crowds are a little thinner. So, if you’re after an island getaway for your Bali honeymoon without the scorching temperatures and the long lines for attractions. Then it’s best to head on your honeymoon in Bali anytime from November to March. As long as you don’t mind a bit of rain!
The best time to visit Bali is from April to September during the dry season. The dry season brings beautiful temperatures in the high 20’s to mid-30’s Celsius. This means better visibility for water sports like scuba diving and snorkelling. The crowds are a little larger following the nicer weather but for good reason.
During the middle of the year brings the least amount of rain. From personal experience, the sweet spot for visiting Bali is April/May or September/October. These shoulder season months offer great temperatures with little rain and might even get you some discounted rooms as tourist numbers are lower.

Arriving in Bali

Arriving in Bali by flight means you’ll land in the capital Denpasar. Plenty of airlines fly to Bali from all over the world, including budget airlines. From personal experience, the best flight to Bali is with Garuda Indonesia. You’ll be able to get great flight deals all year round for your honeymoon in Bali with Skyscanner, especially from Australia and the UK.
Once you arrive at the airport and get through customs, you may be greeted by an overwhelming crowd of drivers and tour guides just itching to give you a cab ride. The best way to make your arrival smooth and hassle-free is by pre-booking a transfer to your accommodation.
If you’ve booked a transfer and sent your driver/accommodation your flight details, they’ll be awaiting your arrival just outside the exit doors. You’ll be free to take in your surroundings and get your incredible honeymoon in Bali underway.

Transport In Bali

Getting around Bali is relatively easy and cheap. The island offers many different taxi services, the most secure being Blue Bird taxis. However, we recommend taking Grab as they’re half the price of regular taxi’s. Blue Bird taxi cars are light blue in colour and have running taxi meters and qualified drivers. Other options include hiring a driver from your hotel (most hotels will offer such services) to take you around for the day, or just to pick you up and drop you off from the airport. Take the hassle out of your honeymoon in Bali. Pre-book your transfer from Denpasar airport to your Bali honeymoon hotel.

Riding A Motorbike On Your Bali Honeymoon

Another popular option for those who are qualified to do so is hiring a mophead to zip around the island on. This can be useful for those that hold the license, are experienced on motorcycles including the Balinese roads and you have the correct travel insurance to do so. Otherwise, another great and much safer option is to hire bicycles for your honeymoon in Bali. Spend your days cycling amongst rice paddies, to waterfalls, by sunsets, and to local markets.

Taxis For Your Honeymoon In Bali

An even better option than a taxi is Grab! It’s 2-3x cheaper than a regular taxi and there are more drivers in South East Asia. We love using Grab as you can’t get ripped off and don’t have to pay with Indonesian Rupiah (Balinese currency) unless you want to. Your first ride is on us, just use our referral code GRABHBACKPACKERS. Take the hassle out of your Balinese honeymoon by booking your onwards Balinese transport ahead of time.

Bali Travel Tips

It is common practice in most places in Bali to remove your shoes before entering. This may include shops, tattoo parlours, spas, restaurants/cafes and people’s houses. If you see plenty of shoes at the entrance to a shop/building, it’s best to remove yours as well. You may find you like it better anyway!
Tap water is not safe to drink in Bali if you’re not used to it. It can cause sickness/food poisoning if you accidentally ingest too much of it… Trust us, this is not how you want to be spending your honeymoon in Bali! Make sure to buy bottled water only. Avoid home-made ice cubes, and don’t open your mouth in the shower (that one is harder than you think). If you do happen to down a glass of Balinese tap water, the sickness will pass like food poisoning. You’ll probably need a trip or two to the local pharmacy for gastro stop and vitamin water containing electrolytes. Pocari sweat is a good sports drink to have when needing electrolytes.
Bali is a majority Hindu island. As such, the locals make Hindu offerings every day; placed outside houses, shops, and temples. These are small, grass woven baskets of often fruit, rice, flowers and incense. Please remember to be respectful; make sure to avoid stepping on them or driving over them when you’re out and about.
Avoid the temptation to try Luwak coffee. This coffee is made at the expense and exploitation of the Luwak animal and has been worsening due to tourist interest.
If you plan on visiting temples and religious sites, make sure to wear clothes that cover your shoulders and knees for all genders.
Tipping is not customary in Bali, but it is widely used and polite considering the cheap prices of most services.
